    Lahore, Capital of Punjab 214 meters above the mean sea level. The Fort is irregular in plan, being about 427 meters east to west and 335 meters north to south. Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, demolished the earlier mud construction and rebuilt it in burnt brick in 1566 AD. Akbar's successors, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb added several buildings to the Fort. The Sikhs occupied the Fort in the 18th century AD. Maharaja Ranjit Singh raised a defence wall on the northern side. The Fort came under the British Military occupation in 1849. Archaeological survey of India took it over in 1927 for Preservation and Restoration.
